As the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission is fast approaching, USA TODAY is providing users with the opportunity to watch live rocket launches in augmented reality (AR) leading up to July 19th with the 321 Launch app.

During a live launch, watch an AR rocket liftoff from any flat surface, as an animated hologram shows you what the actual rocket is doing in real-time. Telemetry data generates a predictive flight-path allowing you to follow the speed, acceleration, and altitude of an active launch live in AR, simply by pointing your phone towards the sky. Tap to live video coverage of the launch and follow live commentary as you watch from anywhere in the world.

In addition to watching rocket launches in real-time, users can launch SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and the Atlas V rocket (created from a joint venture between Lockeed Martin and Boeing). From July 16th onwards, 321 Launch will offer the same experiences as the Apollo 11 landing as if it were happening today.

USA TODAY’s commitments to bringing news coverage and features in AR has been impressive, such as with their breaking AR coverage of the Notre Dame fire back in April. With speedy AR development becoming more of a possibility, developers can provide timely and informational experiences for users to enjoy.
