Chantecaille, a French cosmetics company, recently announced that their new app, Chantecaille Wild Beauty, will use augmented reality (AR) to bring endangered species into users’ homes. Chantecaille made the announcement in conjunction with the premiere of the new Africa’s Vanishing Species Collection. For the six endangered species featured in the new app, Chantecaille supports six different wildlife charities dedicated to conservation.

Chantecaille advertises its AR app as sleek and easy to use. The user only needs to open the app, select one of the six animals, and watch the life-size animal emerge, along with realistic sounds and movements. The animals can then be scaled, moved, and even used for selfies. Chantecaille also plans on adding a video option in October. In addition to its AR capabilities, the app features informational tools to educate users on the facts and challenges of saving endangered species.

Chantecaille also encourages its users to take photographs of the AR animals and to post them to social media in order to help raise awareness and unlock donations. For example, if 1,000 elephant photos are posted with the #ChantecailleWild hashtag in September, Chantecaille will make a donation to the Kenya-based elephant preservation charity Space for Giants.

The app was created by Internet of Elephants and RamJam. Internet of Elephants is a Kenya-based developer of digital wildlife experiences with a focus on consumer engagement with wildlife and conservation efforts. RamJam is a UK-based studio that specializes in both augmented and virtual reality (VR).

While augmented and virtual reality are typically associated with industries like manufacturing and retail, consumer goods companies like Chantecaille are also tapping into the power of AR. Other consumer goods projects include Tesco’s Frozen experience for children in its supermarkets, Formex’s ‘try it before you buy it,’ and the Weather Channel’s simulations of extreme weather.

The app is available for free on the Apple App Store for iOS devices and the Google Play Store for Android devices.
