In a recent post detailing the release notes for the Windows 10 May 2019 update, Microsoft has confirmed that first generation HoloLens will be no longer getting major OS updates, with its October 2018 update being the last for the mixed reality (MR) headset.

HoloLens (1st gen) is entering Long Term Servicing (LTS) state. Future updates will focus on issue and security fixes, while maintaining feature parity with the Windows 10 October 2018 release for HoloLens (also known as RS5).

While it’s sad to see the original HoloLens go, Microsoft’s clearly turning its resources towards developing the HoloLens 2, announced formally earlier this year. Though the device doesn’t have an official release date, Microsoft has already made some bold moves with the headset, including integrating Spatial and virtual assistants, and more controversially, winning a contract with the US Army to use the HoloLens 2 for combat and non-combat uses.
