The past has come to life at the San Antonio International Airport through their new historical, augmented reality (AR) experience, “Experience History: Alamo Edition.” Passengers can download a free app to access the eleven AR terminals scattered throughout the airports two terminals, teaching them about figures such as Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and the “mystery woman” of the Alamo, Sarah, as well as a demonstration of a cannon being loaded and fired. It is the only airport in Texas to have such technology.

“It actually gets your attention because it’s in 3D,” said Tony Hope, public relations manager for the airport. “You can take a selfie with it, take a picture with it. You can put your hands on character and it has audio so you can really learn a lot about Texas history.”

Seven of these terminals have been installed so far. Passengers aren’t the only ones who will be able to join in on the fun, though – some of the exhibits will be located outside of the security gates. The experience will be available for the next five to six months.

“We are at the forefront of creating how history is shared for future generations”, said Michael McGar, president of QuatumERA, the San Antonio-based technology company that created the mixed reality experience. “Utilizing technology to bring history to life is especially important in capturing the attention of younger audiences and appealing to diverse learning styles.”
