UPDATE: OCULUS RIFT S REVEALED

According to a report by UploadVR, an email sent to Oculus developers by Facebook suggests that the PC-based “Rift S” will be revealed formally at Games Developer Conference (GDC) 2019. If true, this reveal would occur around the three-year anniversary of the original Rift, which has been out of stock at retailers worldwide (further suggesting that newer models may be on their way).

We knew that the Oculus Rift S was coming for a while – a TechCrunch report from October of last year revealed that the Rift would receive an iterative update to increase screen resolution and include the Oculus Insight tracking technology that will be shipping with the upcoming Oculus Quest. This implementation could mean that the Rift S may eliminate the need for the USB-powered sensors required for the original Rift to function with tracking.

We’ll have more to report as GDC 2019 stories develop.
