Google finally revealed the next generation of Glass, their enterprise-focused augmented reality (AR) headset, with a new processor, improved camera, and other quality of life updates. Glass Enterprise Edition 2 costs $999, uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XRI chip for AR and virtual reality (VR) functionality and artificial intelligence (AI), and is built on Android for use with Android Enterprise Mobile Device Management. Glass Enterprise Edition 2 is also compatible with Smith Optics safety frames for demanding work environments.
“Glass Enterprise Edition has helped workers in a variety of industries—from logistics, to manufacturing, to field services—do their jobs more efficiently by providing hands-free access to the information and tools they need to complete their work,” said Jay Kothari, the project lead for Glass in a blog post. “Workers can use Glass to access checklists, view instructions or send inspection photos or videos, and our enterprise customers have reported faster production times, improved quality, and reduced costs after using Glass.”
According to Kothari, Google has spent the last two years since the original Glass Enterprise Edition launch collaborating with various partners to “provide solutions that improve workplace productivity for a growing number of customers.” These partners include AGCO, Deutsche Post DHL Group, Sutter Health, and H.B. Fuller.
“What has become commonplace is physicians spending more time staring at the computer screen than spending time face-to-face with patients,” said Dr. Albert Chan, chief of digital patient experience at Sutter Health. “With Glass, what we started to notice is patients saying to us, ‘My doctor is spending more time with me.'”
While Glass Enterprise Edition 2 was leaked back in March, the final product revealed by Google seems to be a bit more powerful than expected. Google’s re-entry into the enterprise AR field is already hot with competition from Microsoft, Lenovo, and others, but Google’s seven year head-start and wealth of data to pull from could provide a robust experience for those in the business and enterprise field.
