In a blog bost on Tech@Facebook, Google announced that their popular virtual reality (VR) painting application Tilt Brush is coming to the Oculus Quest later this spring.

“Tilt Brush is designed for creators — whether you’re a casual doodler or a professional artist,” said Elisabeth Morant, product manager for Google. “Over time, we’ve seen the product used in ways we never would have imagined — from bringing our favorite Disney characters to life, to prototyping what became a Time Magazine’s best of 2018 invention, to 3D printing and casting a Tilt Brush self portrait as a bronze statue. The possibilities are endless, and we’ve only just scratched the surface.”

In the post, Morant discusses that their reasoning for bringing Tilt Brush to Quest after its success on Rift was that the standalone nature of the upcoming headset would “unlock completely new opportunities for our artists to create,” and that the cordless freedom of movement would help creators “visualize their movements in VR.” The porting process mostly focused on optimizing the experience to run smoothly on the mobile headset, as it doesn’t have a high-end PC to back it up.

“Tilt Brush on Quest should look and feel pretty much the same as the Rift version, with a few small tweaks,” Morant said. “We hope this version of Tilt Brush feels even more magical than the Tilt Brush you already know and love.”

The broad appeal of Tilt Brush was a VR application could help with wider adoption of the Quest when it launches sometime this year. By providing experiences that are inviting to newcomers (such as with Nintendo’s Labo VR), the Quest could have a strong footing for its launch that familiarizes people with the opportunities that VR has to offer.
