Italian luxury fashion brand Gucci is bringing the retail experience home to customers with their latest update to their iOS app, allowing users to try on their Ace sneaker collection in augmented reality (AR). Within the Gucci app, users can pick the Ace sneakers of their choice and point their phone’s camera at their feet to try the shoes on virtually. A built-in photo feature lets people share pictures via text, email, or social media.
The underlying experience is powered by Wannaby, a Belarus-based start-up that aims to build commercial AR experiences. Their own app, Wannaby Kicks, allows users to try on various shoes using AR, though the company plans to tackle other clothing and accessory segments.
“When launching Wanna Kicks we knew shoe AR try-on has great potential in retail, e-commerce and among sneaker fans,” CEO Sergey Arkhangelskiy told Venture Beat. “Just a few months after the technology was released, it found its way straight into the Gucci app. The recent Ace sneakers line has an incredible design, with a variety of distinctive details and textures. We’re happy that our technology allows users to have a closer look at these details and interact with models and the Gucci brand through a new experience.”
The world of AR brings brands all sorts of ways to allow potential customers to try their products in real-time before they have to spend any money. Google is also jumping into the AR fashion scene with Beauty Try-On, and Apple is letting users preview the 2019 Mac Pro in their spaces using AR.
