Chinese tech beast Huawei announced plans to field augmented reality (AR) glasses on Tuesday.

As China’s leading telecommunications company, Huawei recently beat out Apple as the #2 smartphone manufacturer. Their phones already feature a number of AR-enabled apps, but Huawei CEO Richard Yu suggested glasses have a place right beside their newest smartphones.

“With this AR, you can have AR glasses working with phone[s],” said Yu. “Maybe you can watch more of a large area.”

To prime the market for consumer AR, Yu also detailed plans to roll out new AR experiences before any glasses come to market.

“[In] the next one to two years I think the industry will commercialize,” Yu continued. “We will bring a better user experience.”

Huawei produces some famously competitive tech for extremely reasonable prices. With Microsoft’s HoloLens showing no plans to expand beyond the comfortable enterprise niche it has cornered, and any glasses from Apple AR remaining in shadow development, Huawei AR glasses promises a potentially more accessible, consumer-and-dev-friendly AR solution.
