At the P30 Pro launch event (and initially discussed back in November), Huawei formally announced its partnership with Korean fashion brand Gentle Monster to release its first smart glasses in June or July 2019, as reported by The Verge.

Gentle Monster is a luxury eyewear company known for its experimental design and artistic expression throughout its product offerings. Its partnership with Huawei doubles-down on the emphasis on fashion that will making the smart glasses more approachable to general consumers, similarly to North’s approach with Focals.

As for the smart glasses’ specs, users can tap the temple to answer calls, take calls, or access the voice assistant through the dual mics and speakers, and charge the smart glasses’ 2200 mAh battery wirelessly via the case or through the USB-C port. Additionally, the glasses are IP67 dust and water resistant. However, they do don’t have any cameras on them or have any augmented reality (AR) capabilities. No price has been announced as of this writing.

Originally, Huawei announced that they planned to release AR glasses back in November. However, this announcement could prove as a testing ground for Huawei to implement more robust AR functions in the next iteration of their glasses (possibly powered by smart watches). With more competition getting into the consumer smart glasses field, the foundation being laid by companies like Huawei and North (and potentially Apple) will lead to product offerings for consumers will only increase in both quantity and proper AR functionality.
