In an update posted on their blog, Indeed reported that postings for positions for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) careers has increased by 1314.44% since 2014, with searches for those jobs increasing by 951.89% in that same time period. Indeed reports that the number of searches made “closely align with the overall number of positions available.” The job board site reports that the cities with the most VR/AR job opportunities is shifting from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic, with the top three cities in ascending order being Raleigh, NC, San Jose, CA, and Charlotte, NC.
“Charlotte is home to the largest percentage of AR/VR job openings nationwide (9.5%), as well as the highest local concentration of these positions,” the blog post reports. “In other words, there are more AR/VR jobs available in Charlotte, relative to other fields, than in other places — making it a prime city to watch.”
Though these metrics mostly reflect the gaming industry, the use of VR and AR is also growing in sectors such as education and healthcare, and the projected shipments of headsets are forecasted to reach 8.9 million units in 2019. This surge in job growth across these verticals indicates that the demand for VR and AR experiences is increasing, and the more professionals developing in this space will help to improve and diversify the experiences that we need.
