As one of the star donors behind Diane von Fürstenberg’s Statue of Liberty Museum renovation project, Apple, in partnership with Yap Studios, developed a Statue of Liberty augmented reality (AR) app so that iOS users from all around the world can bring the iconic statue into their own homes.
In addition to viewing Lady Liberty as she currently is in AR, people can view CGI recreations of what she used to look like over a century ago, before her copper skin began to patina into the familiar green hue today. The app also provides historical documentation about the Statue’s history and efforts to keep it standing.

“Augmented reality really lets you place literal objects and experience into the real world around you,” von Fürstenberg said in an article for Vogue. “It allows you to learn about the statue and the experience. You can place the Statue of Liberty in a class room or a living room; it’s available in the Apple store in 155 countries, and with one billion devices in peoples’ hands, our museum experience goes from New York to the globe!”
The app is currently available for iPhone and iPad for free on the App Store.
