Magic Leap, a multi-billion dollar AR startup, has recently released new updates to their VR headset, the Magic Leap One (ML1). In Lumin OS update 0.97, Magic Leap introduced occlusive hand meshes that also allow users to hold virtual objects. This is built upon the previous update, 0.96, in which full skeleton tracking of the hand was implemented. In just two months, the technology was improved and expanded upon.

Various interface updates were made as well, including the ability to bookmark items from one’s browser, a six-way call in Avatar Chat and a dark mode browser appearance. The program was also internationalized for the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.

A Lumin music app titled Overture was also added in this update, allowing third-party apps to integrate with the ML1 background music to give users control over the music in their environment. Multiplayer options have also expanded in this update. A public beta was released for its cloud Map Merge feature, which allows for two or more people to play together on the ML1.

According to Yannick Pellet, SVP of Software, the multiplayer function “can support a multiplayer game taking place over several floors within a medium-sized space (1500 sq feet or so). It’s also possible to develop an app for 5-10 users, with 4-5 people in the same room and 10 people in other areas of the same building.”

Version 0.97 also came with some updates on cross-platform compatibility. Developers added support for various mapping and networking protocols, furthering their journey to supporting cross-platform play.

While Magic Leap continues advancing the headset’s abilities, users around the country have been watching the news, playing games and even facing off with White Walkers from HBO’s “Game of Thrones” on the ML1 since its release last year.
