After a devastating fire destroyed the roof of the Notre Dame cathedral, USA TODAY released an immersive augmented reality (AR) experience called “Notre Dame: After the Fire,” that details what remained in tact and the efforts to restore the French landmark to its former glory.
The experience (accessible for free in USA TODAY’s official app on the App Store and Google Play) generates a 3D model of Notre Dame that people can resize, rotate, and place on flat surfaces, and then inspect key parts of the structure. USA TODAY’s emerging technology team included information how each area was affected by the fire, along with the history surrounding its purpose and construction.
Though the network has been experimenting with virtual reality (VR) and AR since 2015, USA TODAY has doubled-down on AR storytelling, releasing an augmented experience featuring Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson, as well as teaming up with the Oscars to bring a collection of famous costumes to life in AR. The speed and accuracy with which brought this timely experience to life could prompt more in-depth, immersive learning on important events and stories.
