Overstock.com has recently updated their augmented reality (AR) technology, through its partnership with extended reality (XR) company Seek. This update expands their existing AR tech from the mobile app to include their mobile website, as well. 100% of their mobile market, whether they have the Overstock app or not, can now place 3D representations of furniture, rugs and decor inside their homes.
“Mobile consumers make up more than 50% of our customers, and industry wide we see more and more consumers shopping on their mobile devices,” said Sumit Goyal, chief digital officer for Overstock.com. “AR is tapping into these high-use devices and giving our customers a heightened experience.”
Seek is a cross-platform, web-based AR, which prides itself on its “improved sales through AR for commerce,” according to their website. They also claim that studies show customers who interact with a product in AR are 30% more likely to purchase the product and 25% less likely to return. Goyal stated that while it is too soon to share such results, Overstock has seen a decrease in returns. “To us, this translates that the experience is being well received,” he said.
“The partnership between Seek and Overstock constitutes one of the biggest steps towards mass adoption of AR to date,” said Jon Cheney, Seek CEO and founder. “With a retailer of the size of Overstock taking the lead, consumers will begin to expect the same level of innovation from others. I believe that within just a few short years, this will be a standard on any e-commerce website.”
This technology is very similar to the tech that lets Houzz customers test out new floors, which we have also recently written about. We at Th3rdEyeXR really suggest you read up about it, because mobile AR is evolving faster than you think.
