While Samsung has been known to struggle in the competitive market of smartphones, a recent video posted by CNN has shed some light on what’s going on inside of the Samsung labs in Suwon, South Korea. The video from CNN showed Samsung pursuing a variety of projects beyond just smartphones, from cars that are meant to be self-contained mobile phones to robotic muscle-assistance exoskeletons. What stood out the most, however, was Samsung’s pursuits in virtual reality (VR).

We’ve written about some of Samsung’s forays into the market, from augmented reality (AR) emojis as virtual assistants to our own Brian Knapp’s review last year of Samsung’s Odyssey as the best Head Mounted Display (HMD) at the time. So it seems that Samsung is certainly capable of producing quality products.

But what was shown in the video from CNN was something completely different. Now, Samsung is experimenting with VR headsets that can help vision-impaired people. More specifically, the headset can be paired with Samsung phones and the software is designed to detect outlines in the real world. From there, the headset enhances colors and contrast and is able to produce a clear and accurate representation of the user’s field of vision. The CNN video showed a reporter wearing opaque glasses to block her vision with the VR headset placed on top.

“One thing that Samsung is very good at is that they are very, very aggressive in the way they approach the technology space — sometimes a bit overly aggressive,” said Bryan Ma, vice president of client devices research at Samsung. “But, in the grand scheme of things, it’s good because it keeps them on that leading edge of technology.”

In the meantime, Samsung has already begun to make inroads into the VR market, as in the aforementioned case of Odyssey. Now, Samsung advertises the Gear VR, a headset powered by Oculus and equipped with a controller that “seamlessly responds to organic, human movements in virtual experiences.” The company’s Samsung VR website now directs users towards Gear VR, Gear360 (Samsung’s response to the GoPro), and other VR capabilities available via the app Samsung XR and the desktop.
