John Gore, theater producer and owner of the live theater company the John Gore Organization has teamed up with MelodyVR to give us a taste of the virtual reality (VR) future of Broadway through At The Tonys Be More Chill VR Experience, a behind the scenes featurette of the new musical, Be More Chill. This experience gives viewers a one-on-one conversation with the composer of Be More Chill, Joe Iconis, in a VR tour of the Tony Awards suite at the Sofitel New York Hotel, as well as scenes from the musical.

VR could present an amazing new future to entertainment as a whole, especially Broadway. MelodyVR’s previous projects have allowed audiences to become more immersed than ever in stage productions – shows like Kelly Clarkston, Post Malone, and Imagine Dragons all offer multiple vantage points, or “jump points,” which let the the audience decide on the fly if they want to view from deep in the crowd, close to the stage, or even on the stage itself. Imagine seeing things from Elphaba’s perspective as she soars into the sky in Wicked, or being inside the orphanage with Annie. The possibilities are endless.

“At the core of MelodyVR is our vision of connecting fans with unobtainable experiences, in new and immersive ways,” said Anthony Matchett, CEO of MelodyVR. “Musical theater is a natural evolution in our journey. And I’m pleased that we will soon be delivering even more amazing content to consumers via our partnership with JGO [John Gore Organization].”

But VR could also open up the world of Broadway to vast new audiences, as well. Being so portable, and slowly but surely becoming more accessible, this technology could allow audiences anywhere to experience the magic of theater.

“Every single thing we do at [the John Gore Organization] is centered around the goal to serve tantalizing content to theater fans, regardless of their geographical location,” said Gore “Using VR technology is just one more way to deliver Broadway to fans around the globe, especially when the live experience of Broadway and touring Broadway is beyond their reach.”

The MelodyVR app is currently available for Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR, and At The Tonys Be More Chill VR Experience is available in 360 for those who do not have headsets yet, both on YouTube and above. Be sure to download it now and bookmark Broadway.com/vr to see what Broadway has to virtually offer to us next.

VR has been changing musicals in many ways recently: as we previously reported, VR changed the War of the Worlds’ soundtrack.
