Paving the way for virtual reality (VR) training and gamification, Philippine Airlines (PAL) and Veer Immersive Technologies have implemented VR training for its cabin crews as a means to prepare them for any dangerous situations in a safer environment.

“While the use of technology in pilot training has evolved tremendously over the past decades, cabin crew training has largely remained unchanged over the years. We are excited to pioneer a truly practical application of VR technology,” said PAL President and COO Dr. Jaime J. Bautista, “Our solution not only provides a more efficient training process, but more importantly, it enhances the learning experience of our crew members by making it more immersive, interactive, and fun.”

Veer Immersive’s gamification of the PAL’s cabin crew training lets users to easily interact with aircraft equipment as many times as they wish, allowing for self-paced training that instills greater confidence in those who engage with the course. Developed in close coordination with and with the approval of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), the May 2018 batch of trainees will be the first to use the VR program.

“Whether it’s for enforcing safety or giving our valued passengers the special care and attention they deserve, we want our PAL cabin crew to be the world’s best,” Bautista said.

To better train new employees on detail-intensive material, gamification in VR makes densely-layered, abstract concepts much more concrete for those who have to engage with them. Seeing a major airline like PAL signals to developers and instructional designers that a need for these sorts of experiences and know-how not only exists, but is necessary for an effective organization to thrive.
