Shortly after its reveal right in the middle of announcing Rift S and Quest’s price and release date, Valve released CAD files on GitHub for its Index virtual reality (VR) headset under a Creative Commons license, allowing anyone to design their own creations for the high-fidelity device. While creators can’t sell their designs without Valve’s consent, the company is open to “feedback, requests, and most importantly, interesting creations,” according to their GitHub post.

The 3D models available for download include the Visor, Face Gasket, Head Strap, Audio drivers, Index controllers, the Basestation, and the “Frunk” (a portmanteau of “front” and “trunk”) that hosts accessories, such as a USB 3 type A port. Any models with cameras or sensors include a “sensor inclusion zone model” for larger creations. This model is included so that designs can be made without blocking cameras and sensors.

People who design creations from these CAD files are encouraged to contact Valve to share their designs for feedback and, possibly, for profit. The email provided is SteamHardwareFeedback@valvesoftware.com.
