Varjo, creators of the XR-3 headset with AR and VR capability, recently unveiled their latest software offering, Reality Cloud. By combining all the sensor info their headsets have such as rgb cameras and lidar sensors, Varjo’s meeting platform can have all this environmental data streamed to participants and updated in real-time.

Instead of a static 2d screen, participants can look around the host’s location with object depth and scale. Varjo envisions it useful for industry applications or teaching where the location itself is instrumental to the conversation.

Varjo hopes to bring this platform to other headsets by moving the processing off of the device and onto the cloud, creating a platform-agnostic solution for participants.

There are some initial roadblocks to Varjo’s solution, the need for their high-end headset (starting at $5,495 plus a monthly subscription) and the need for a separate computer to power the headset. Varjo’s plans are ambitious but as technology progresses and the ability to offload applications like these onto the cloud improves, it’s certainly an interesting glimpse into the future.
