Facebook’s current Chief Technical Officer (CTO), Mike Schroepfer, will be stepping down and becoming Facebook’s first Senior Fellow at the company next year. Replacing Schroepfer will be Facebook’s current head of Facebook Reality Labs, Andrew Bosworth, who will also continue his previous duties while being CTO.

In a blog post from Mark Zuckerberg, he mentions that this transition is “all foundational to our broader efforts helping to build the metaverse”, metaverse being Facebook’s attempts to create an XR platform that creators can build and socialize within. Schroepfer also mentioned similar sentiment in his Facebook post announcing his step down about bolstering the metaverse initiative with Bosworth at the helm.

With the recent release of the Rayban Stories glasses and the success of the Oculus Quest 2, Facebook is certainly investing in the future of XR technology. Now with their chief of XR development at the head of all development at Facebook, it will be interesting to see what other software or hardware will come from Facebook to bolster their metaverse plans.
