Among the countless announcements that Google made at their I/O keynote, augmented reality (AR) integration into Google Maps may be the app that brings the general perception of AR from a cheeky oddity to an everyday necessity.

AR mode for Maps operates as a sort of heads-up display, combining geographic data with your smartphone’s camera so that the user has contextual, turn-by-turn directions to navigate unfamiliar city blocks in front of them.

While the proof of concept is fascinating, AR for Maps isn’t much more than just that right now, and Google has made that clear during their presentation. AR for Maps is a continuing project that we can’t wait to see more of. Keep an eye on Th3rdEyeXR for any future developments!
