GIGXR, an extended reality (XR) software as a service (SaaS) system for instructor-led teaching and training, recently released two new extensions to their XR medical training applications, Holopatient Remote and Gig Mobile. The immersive learning systems are used for clinical training and education in medical and nursing schools, higher education and the Department of Defense.

The first extension, Holopatient Remote, runs on the existing software, Holopatient, GIGXR’s flagship product, and is designed for instructor-led classroom settings. The software allows students to view and work on AR holographic patients in a safe-to-fail teaching environment and true-to-life medical scenarios through a Hololens headset. The benefits of simulated training are broadened by the second new software extension, GIG Mobile, which allows the Holopatient platform to be used on a mobile device, rather than a Virtual Reality (VR) headset. GIG Mobile eliminates the necessity of VR headsets, which can be a limiting factor for education and training, and allows students to access the content at home or on the go via phone or tablet.

GIGXR’s training extensions come at a pivotal time in the world of COVID. The XR technology allows medical students to conduct their studies in an isolated or socially distanced environment while traditional classroom settings may not be available. The procedure simulations occur while maintaining standards of first rate learning, such as collaborative groups, instant feedback from professors, and independent exploring for students. Holopatient Remote was praised as “the closest, highest-quality learning experience you can get to training with real patients.” by Dr. Linda Herrmann, NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing, in an official press release.

While these XR training tools are designed primarily for  medical students, the software is a testament to how XR can be used in training scenarios across a variety of enterprises. Something as complicated as medical examinations and prognoses can be taught easily with adequate XR technology. Innovators in XR, like GIGXR, continue to prove that remote training and learning are nothing to fear. The flexibility of the technology overcomes obstacles presented by isolation, distance, or need to learn via simulation to prepare for real-life scenarios.
