It’s official – after speculation earlier this year, Nintendo is bringing virtual reality (VR) to the Switch through Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04, aiming to provide “a unique first VR experience kids and families can build themselves,” according to the company’s product page.

Releasing on April 12th, 2019, the Labo VR Starter Kit with come with a Google Cardboard-esque pair of VR Goggles and a Blaster accessory (for $39.99). Two expansion sets will be released alongside the Starter Kit: the first being called “Camera + Elephant” (for $19.99) and the second called “Bird + Wind Pedal” (also for $19.99) All of these items can be purchased as one bundle purchase for $79.99. While these accessories are in line with the other quirky kits released for the Labo platform, as of this writing, we do not know what games the in each of these kits will entail. Perhaps mindful of the Virtual Boy and initial 3DS controversy, Nintendo has made all games playable in 2D and stated that the kit’s VR mode is for ages seven and up.

The inital approach that Nintendo’s taking to VR could be a sign for more applications to come – and with the Switch’s vast install base, this move could be what familiarizes the general consumer with other extended realities (XR) tech.
